Data Protection Act

This act is in place to prevent companies not using your data properly. there are 8 principles and you must know at least FOUR of them and be ablt to comment on these. For example

Data must be kept secure
Data must be accurate and up to date
Data must not be transferred outside the EU
Data must be obtained fairly & lawfully

Spreadsheets

These are great for doing sums! You can use formulas to calculate sums and averages. they are made up of rows and columns. Sums in spreadsheets ALWAYS start with the = sign.

Try this link to help you with spreadsheets

Databases

Databases are made up of FIELDS such as Firstname, Surname, DateOfBirth, Telephonenumber and so on. A collection of FIELDS is called a RECORD. A collection of RECORDS are stored in a file.

Databases SAVE SPACE and are more secure then paper based filing systems. It is also easy to search for data in a database.

User Interfaces

This is a menu driven interface. There are also Command line interfaces (DOS is an example of this) and Graphical user interfaces (GUI - Like windows).

The user interface is how YOU can interact with the PC.

Operating systems

These are great as they are run computer systems. They are the FIRST piece of software loaded into RAM when you turn on the computer. they have many functions such as allocating memory to programs, handling security and communicating with devices like printers. any questions or advice about this topic please post under this thread.
